One in three women die of heart disease, making it the number one cause of death for women. Risk factors such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure, unhealthy eating, physical inactivity, obesity, diabetes, alcohol intake and family history can all increase the risk for heart disease.

If you are a woman living in Winnebago, Boone, or Dekalb County, between 40 and 64 years of age, you may be eligible to participate in the Illinois WISEWOMAN Program (IWP) located at the Winnebago County Health Department. The Illinois WISEWOMAN Program (IWP) can help women live a heart healthy lifestyle.

About the Program

The Illinois WISEWOMAN program is a 16-week program that combines Health Screenings and Health Coaching to ensure you are on a path to a heart healthy lifestyle.

  • Together with the Illinois Breast and Cervical Cancer Program offers a combined office visit where eligible women can receive screenings for heart disease (including blood pressure, glucose and cholesterol), breast cancer and cervical cancer in one easy visit.
  • Health coaching is also provided to help you eat healthy, become more active, and stop smoking if needed.

Your success beyond the 16 weeks is just as important and to ensure that you have the support system and motivation to continue on your heart healthy journey, some IWP participants may be referred to community-based lifestyle programs such as weight loss programs or fitness programs at little or no cost to the participant.
