Residential Sharps Disposal

Don't Trash Sharps, Keep Our Community Safe

Winnebago County Residents can now dispose of sharps at 5 sharps disposal boxes conveniently located across the county with one each in the northeast, southeast, southwest, northwest, and central sections.

Why It Matters

Safe sharps disposal helps protect our community and environment.

How It Works

  1. Place needles and injectors in a sharps container
  2. Securely close the container
  3. Return it to a sharps disposal box

What If I Don't Have A Sharps Container?

All sharps must be in a sharps bin or other puncture resistant and sealed container. Each collection site has sharps containers available for free while supplies last.

No Sharps Container Available? Create One At Home

If an FDA-approved sharps container is not available, place used sharps in a strong, plastic container, like a laundry detergent or bleach bottle. The container should be:

  • Made of heavy-duty plastic
  • Leak-resistant
  • Have a tight-fitting, puncture-resistant lid.

Remove identifiable information and label “Sharps – Do NOT Recycle”. Seal the container with the lid and duct tape when it is about 3/4 full and take it to the sharps disposal box.

If your sharps container does not fit in the sharps disposal box, please ask for assistance at the site.
