Protect Yourself Against Measles

Measles spreads through the air and is very dangerous to those unvaccinated. Getting Vaccinated is the best way to protect yourself against measles

Measles can be prevented with the MMR vaccine. The vaccine protects against three diseases: measles, mumps, and rubella. Now is the time to make sure you are up-to date on your MMR vaccine. Talk to your vaccine provider (primary care or pharmacist) if you are unsure or need to be vaccinated.

Measles can be serious in all age groups, but some are more likely to suffer from measles complications including:

  • Children younger than 5 years of age
  • Pregnant women
  • People with compromised immune systems

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:

  • About 1 out of 5 people who get measles will be hospitalized.
  • 1 to 3 out of 1,000 people with measles will die, even with the best care

If you are experiencing symptoms of measles, please call your healthcare provider right away BEFORE walking into the medical office or emergency department. The medical provider will make arrangements for you to be seen so that you do not expose others.

On April 23, 2025, the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) reported the first confirmed measles case of 2025 in the state in Southern Illinois and reported that the risk of measles transmissions for the general public in Illinois remains low. For more information, see the IDPH news release here.
