Powassan Virus Found In Ticks From Winnebago County

For the first time, ticks from Winnebago County have tested positive for Powassan virus. There is no vaccine for Powassan virus which can lead to serious health complications impacting the heart, skeletal, and nervous systems. The key is to prevent tick bites.

The Winnebago County Health Department (WCHD) encourages residents to take steps to prevent tick bites and watch for symptoms of illness after being outside in the yard or walking in wooded or grassy areas.

Take steps to prevent tick bites:
• Avoid high tick locations such as wooded areas or areas with tall grass and weeds.
• Wear long, light-colored clothing including socks, shoes, and pants when outdoors.
• Apply insect repellents approved by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
• Reduce ticks in yards.
• Perform regular tick checks while outdoors by scanning your legs and arms for climbing ticks.
